OUTCOMES

5 LOBBIES FOR 5 DIFFERENT CONTEXTS

Based on the research we gathered on virtual and physical lobby and waiting spaces, students choose a specific context to design their own "fourth place" in order to apply their research into a real context and social setting. The outcomes range from museums, university orientation & campus life, architecture school, social chatting games and a virtual film festival.

It was essential to prototype the ideas directly in a social virtual reality/cross-platform space; therefore, students built their lobbies in Mozilla Hubs in order to test their ideas and interaction concepts in space.

If you have a VR headset, Google Cardboard or even through your internet browser, you can join and explore the lobby prototype space in a social VR setting. Follow the TOUR UI to learn how to navigate or read the Mozilla Hubs tutorial here.

You can use the WASD buttons to move and Q and E buttons to rotate your view. Press spacebar and click to share emoticons or find locations to teleport to.

The Quad

AN ONLINE INTERACTIVE SPACE TO LINK NEW/RETURNING UNIVERSITY STUDENTS WITH THE EXTRA-CURRICULAR COMMUNITY.

The Quad aspires to help you explore your options at orientation week by facilitating the transfer of interactions that would’ve happened in-person into an immersive online format. Cubic infrastructure and multi-gravity help to connect students and augment university life by housing booths to showcase the wide variety of sports, clubs and societies that students can join as well as meet the current members.

THE QUAD

Students can choose to explore the interior or exterior. From joining a club, selling a second-hand book, looking for an apartment or roommate, to video chatting and meeting new friends on the smaller domes surrounding The Quad. User information can be displayed and customized on the avatars' cardboard boxes. Everything for an on-campus orientation experience is possible!

MSD
Re-imagined

EXPLORATION THROUGH SCALE, TIME & SPACE.

Socializing with friends has become such a frustrating and difficult activity to do in the midst of Covid 19 and the chaos of online classes. MSD Re-imagined is a virtual platform that brings architecture students together again to encourage stronger, more diverse networks and inputs. Through the play of scale, the architecture of MSD Re-imagined brings students into worlds within worlds, each time going into more intimate spaces for personal interactions and activities. Bending the realities of scale, time and place; MSD Re-imagined celebrates the opportunities of socializing in virtual, to create memories and stories with friends again.

MSD
RE-IMAGINED

The virtual space consists of islands with different functions and activities. Each space brings one further into a different scale of space by spawning in and out. This prototype in Hubs is designed to give users a quick insight into how the space would be used, but it is not the actual depiction of the design or the interactions.

Cyberfilm Festival

IMMERSE INTO THE 4TH DIMENSION

The Cyberfilm festival brings families, friends, and the animation community together to network, appreciate and create opportunities into the evolving film industry. Meet the panelists as they share their interactable 3D assets. Meet and greet actors in a new immersive, virtual experience. The Cyberfilm festival is a place where visitors engage with the animated storyworlds like never before.

CYBERFILM FESTIVAL

Our hub aims to create an experience for users that could help them truly immerse into the 4th dimension. We use playful colours, lightings, sounds, and geometries to create movie worlds that are only achievable in cyberspace. The pass system tailors every participant's experience: from sharing, networking and socialising with others in the industry or exploring all the festival has to offer.

The Untitled, Untitled, Untitled Virtual Gallery

GALLERY SPACES REIMAGINED AS IMMERSIVE AND ENGAGING EXPERIENCES

My lobby looks into the "in-between space" of galleries as an exploration of artworks, creating a journey of micro to macro. The gallery immerses users in an experience that deconstructs the artworks' core elements in a way that provides a more informed and engaged viewing lens. When the user views to the whole artworks, they would carry with them this new perception and understanding of the artworks themselves.

THE UNTITLED, UNTITLED, UNTITLED VIRTUAL GALLERY

Using Hubs, and particularly through VR, my lobbies immersive values start to come to life. Animated assets, proximity audio and being able to experience the space socially allows for the journey and each room within it to be experienced as intended.

Escape

ESCAPE TO WONDERLAND TO RECONNECT

Escape is an online social plaform inspired from the adventures of Alice in Wonderland where Alice jumped through a rabbit hole to escape to another world. Even though Alice knew that she would eventually leave her dream world, when she returned to reality she remembered all the things she learned during her adventure and kept these values with her as she grew up. Like the rabbit hole, Escape is a space for people to step away from reality and meet others for a while.

PROJECT BY: Xinyi Wu

ESCAPE

If you are stressed or overwhelmed, leave reality for a moment, step into the rabbit hole for a moment. Play and connect with strangers or reconnect with friends so you, in turn, can leave the game feeling a bit better.
